Redefining Sustainable Development

The Vision Behind Shift Esperanza in Nosara, Costa Rica

Matthew Blesso, founder of Shift Esperanza, sits down with Richard Bexson, host of the Costa Rica Real Estate & Investments podcast to discuss his journey of creating a community-focused, environmentally sustainable real estate project in Nosara. From his early experiences as a real estate developer in New York to his vision of a new housing model in Costa Rica, Matthew shares insights on how Shift Esperanza aims to set a new standard for conscious living and regenerative development.

From New York to Costa Rica: A Mission for Change

Matthew Blesso began his career in New York’s real estate industry. After achieving success at a young age, however, he felt like something was missing. His desire to go beyond profit-driven development led him to explore more purpose-driven projects. After a retreat at the Blue Spirit Retreat Center in Nosara, Matthew was inspired by Costa Rica’s natural beauty and strong values of environmental stewardship. He realized the potential for creating a regenerative community that harmonizes housing development with reforestation efforts.

A New Model for Community-Focused Living

Shift Esperanza is built around the concept of fostering genuine connections among residents. Matthew emphasizes that the community is designed to offer more than just a place to live—it’s about creating a “chosen family” (I love the spirit of this term but it may feel like too much for people who would just prefer to live in a friendly village instead of isolated nuclear families. Maybe “interconnected village?”) where neighbors genuinely care for and support one another. This model offers an antidote to modern-day isolation by promoting shared values, mutual support, and meaningful connections.

“We wanted to create an environment where community is optional but always available for those who seek it,” says Matthew. “It’s about living among people who share values of kindness, connection, and mutual support.”

Embracing Sustainability and Regenerative Design

Unlike conventional real estate developments, Shift Esperanza is committed to sustainability and environmental regeneration. The project focuses on “re-wilding” previously deforested land by planting thousands of trees. “There’s an opportunity here to build homes while creating a positive environmental impact through reforestation,” explains Matthew. By integrating native flora and sustainable design principles, the project aims to restore biodiversity and become a model for eco-friendly development in Costa Rica.

Harnessing Technology for Connection

While technology often isolates people, Shift Esperanza takes a different approach. The community’s proprietary app is designed to foster real-world connections among residents. It helps them organize activities, share resources, and support one another. This innovative use of technology enhances the experience of living in a conscious community.

“We see technology as a tool that can bring people together rather than isolate them,” says Matthew. “It can create opportunities for shared experiences, collective childcare, and resource-sharing.”

Navigating Challenges in Costa Rica’s Development Landscape

Developing in Costa Rica presents unique challenges. Matthew notes that patience is essential, as the permitting process and assembling a skilled local team can take time. However, the slower pace has allowed Shift Esperanza to refine its vision and create a more thoughtful and resilient project.

“In Costa Rica, things take longer, but that time has actually made the project better,” says Matthew. “It’s given us space to build a strong team and ensure that the community aligns with our core values.”

Lessons Learned and Advice for Aspiring Developers

Matthew’s journey in creating Shift Esperanza has taught him the importance of building the right team, focusing on long-term relationships, and prioritizing integrity. “If you hire the right people, everything else falls into place,” he shares. He also emphasizes that mission-based projects are more likely to succeed in Costa Rica due to the country’s focus on environmental stewardship and community values.

A Vision for the Future

As Shift Esperanza continues to grow, Matthew remains committed to creating a model for sustainable, community-driven living that will influence others. “Our goal is to inspire people to see that development can be both environmentally responsible and profitable,” says Matthew. “We want to show that you can create something truly special when you prioritize people, community, and the planet.”

Shift Esperanza is more than just a real estate development—it’s a vision for a regenerative future where community, sustainability, and environmental stewardship are at the forefront. Through projects like Shift, Costa Rica continues to be a model for conscious living and sustainable development.
